Travis Kvapil started day two of the Auto Parts 500 Monday under protest. Apparently, the young unsponsored driver attempted to stay in bed this morning with fresh memories of his second place finish in the race the night before.
However, Kvapil’s friends reluctantly explained to him that even though he got to go home when rain made racing impossible at California Speedway last night, he had not in fact finished second.
With audible cries of, “It’s not fair,” emanating from beneath Kvapil’s bedroom door, his race team (mostly made up of Kvapil’s high school debate club teammates) quickly huddled up. Ultimately, they settled on a diversionary strategy, and they lured him from his bedroom by telling Kvapil he had a meeting with a potential sponsor, and by letting the smell of waffles waft through the Kvapil household.
“This is really tough on Travis,” his mother said. “I mean, why do those mean men have to go racing again today. I saw him take second place last night fair and square. Travis would have kept racing if they wanted him to, and I should know — I’m not just his mother, I’m also his crew chief.”
Kvapil’s father/business manager had another concern. “I just watched that #28 circle caution laps in the second position and all I could think about was that shiny white unsponsored hood. If I’d have been thinking, I would have written Your Ad Here and my cell phone number on it in sharpie pen.
