Uploaded on May 9, 2008 by Ford Racing on FLickrFox is reportedly trying to clear up a serious behind-the-scenes situation when, the Thursday before the Best Buy 400 at Dover, they attempted to preview the Fox Cutaway Driver.

Following on the success of the Cutaway Car and Cutaway Pit Crew Box, Fox Sports executives thought the Cutaway Driver would enable broadcaster Jeff Hammond to explain to audiences what is going on in the most important component of the race — the driver.

Hammond’s handlers told blackflaggedonline they thought they had a winner. “We envisioned Jeff being able to take viewers inside the driver the same way he takes them inside the vehicle. He could point at the exposed brain and tell folks where all the decisions about turning and braking were being made. Then he could point to the heart and show the audience where the determination to win comes from. We thought it would really revolutionize our coverage.”

Fox filmed test segments of Jeff Hammond pointing at fellow broadcaster and former team member Darrell Waltrip to explain the same concepts. In a short piece where Hammond was asked why the pair didn’t win more championships, Hammond got upset and started to gesture at Waltrip’s crotch area, explaining that something was apparently missing that would have the car more aggressive on the track.

“What was it? His liver? A spleen? We just couldn’t capture the essence of what Jeff was describing. That’s when we decided to go with the cutaway driver,” execs said.

Things started to go bad when Hammond convinced currently-unemployed driver Carl Long to lay down on his man-sized table saw. Long, who will have to part his hair on the side from now on, was able to wriggle loose from the HANS device Hammond had used to secure him to the table.

NASCAR emergency crews were immediately called to the scene. Long was sprayed with CO2 and taken to the infield care center where he was treated and released.
