Coming away with little more than a bloody nose and a bruised ego, Kurt Busch walked away from a post race altercation with himself after the Best Buy 400 on Sunday. After a disappointing 20th place finish, Busch caught a reflection of himself in the doors to his hauler and immediately confronted himself. The enraged Busch ran face first into the glass, bloodying his nose.
After several minutes of screaming at his reflection, the driver was restrained by his crew and taken away to calm down. “We just thought it would be best to get Kurt away from himself,” Crew chief Pat Tryson said. “Clearly he was saying things that he didn’t mean and would most certainly regret later.” The argument is thought to be the result of an on track incident that caused Busch to lose control of the car and brush the wall, putting the driver a lap down and virtually erasing any chance the driver had of a top 5 finish.
Known for his quick temper and numerous altercations with other drivers, Busch has seemingly been on his best behavior since being put on probation by NASCAR after an incident with Tony Stewart during the final practice session before the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.
In order to avoid a suspension and comply with the terms of his probation, Busch has had several sessions with NASCAR staff psychologist Cindy Buford. “I’ve told Kurt to look inward to discover what it is that is setting him off and causing him to get into these disagreements,” Buford explained. “Of course our sessions are subject to doctor/patient confidentiality but I can tell you that I’ve told Kurt to take a close look at the guy in the mirror before he jumps to conclusions and assigns blame to others. I’m proud of him. I think he’s making real progress. It doesn’t help things though when his little brother keeps winning races.”
“Kurt will be alright,” Pat Tryson said. “If I know him, he’ll get a chance to cool down and he’ll feel awful bad about himself tomorrow. I wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility that these two will have heart to heart tomorrow when they have to stare at each other in the mirror.”
