When NASCAR’s second tier series changed sponsorship from Busch to Nationwide this season many fans decried the change and expressed sadness at the loss of the long time sponsor of the Series. NASCAR has learned the hard way that fans are hesitant to accept change in the sport which values its traditions and heritage. Previous efforts to introduce change into the sport have failed miserably while others have taken a while to catch on. For instance, fans have had a hard time warming up to new developments in the sport such as the Car of Tomorrow, TNT race coverage and fuel conservation efforts such as debris cautions.
But that doesn’t deter Mike Helton from continuing to push the envelope. Not one to shy away from controversy or give a rats ass about what fans think, Helton is seeking to repackage the Craftsman Truck Series in order to “spice things up a bit.” Sources close to Helton, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to threats to their wellbeing, say Helton is concerned over the television ratings for the Truck Series and has decided to rename the Series as the Busch Series. The announcement was met with widespread excitement by the NASCAR fan base until it became clear that the name change would not reflect sponsorship from Busch beer but would instead be a tribute to the hottest driver in NASCAR, Kyle Busch.
News of the change spread through the garage area at Kentucky Speedway where drivers in the newly named Busch Truck Series will be racing tonight in the Built Ford Tough 250. Jon Wood, driver of the Barnhill Group Ford truck, commented “I wish I was Kyle Busch.” While National Football League star Randy Moss, who is making his debut as a Busch Truck Series owner this weekend, denied any knowledge of anyone named Kyle Busch and said “Randy Moss don’t know anybody not named Randy Moss. Believe that. Nothing against him because I don’t know nobody named Craftsman either. I’m sure he’s a nice guy too.”
Helton was characteristically unapologetic for the move and said that drivers should get used to the change. He also indicated that complaints are welcome and that he will deal with all concerns in his traditional manner of punching the complainer in the face.
“Until someone else actually learns how to drive a car or a truck like Kyle I don’t give a damn what they think. Hell, if he keeps winning the way he is I might just have to name all three circuits after him,” said Helton’s mustache speaking on behalf of Helton. “Shucks, I think fans is really gonna love the new name. Everybody loves that lil’ goober — tossing beers on the track to help ole’ Kyle celebrate! It’s just so gol-durn cute.”
