Dale Earnhardt Jr. isn’t a happy camper. With good equipment week in and out, a new team, sponsorship dollars, and a spot in the Chase, you’d think that he has everything a guy could ever want. But Earnhardt Jr. wants more. He covets the Sprint Cup championship that his Hendrick Motorsports teammates, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon have won, multiple times. While sitting 8th in the Chase, 190 points out of 1st, he isn’t out of contention but the odds are long against him. But hanging out there rubbing salt in the wound is the fact that Earnhardt Jr. proposed a new points system to determine the Sprint Cup Championship before this season, only to be rebuffed by the powers that be at NASCAR.
“The current point system is flawed and my client came to the table with a proposal that would crown a champion in a fair way,” said Earnhardt Jr. attorney Harvey Beetlenuts. “Any number of things can happen during a race that are beyond control of the driver, an engine failure, blown tire, driving too close to Michael Waltrip. Does that mean you are a bad driver? Certainly not.”
The proposal, submitted to NASCAR President Mike Helton on behalf of Earnhardt Jr. through Beetlenuts because of safety concerns, states that the points championship should be determined by a fan vote.
“By giving the people a say in the championship, NASCAR is returning the power to the fans,” explained Beetlenuts. “There is no question that Greg Biffle is a fine race car driver but seriously, is that the kind of guy NASCAR wants out there as their champion? I think not. Think about this, can you imagine Matt Kenseth or Clint Bowyer on the late night talk shows? What a snooze fest. Now Dale Jr. on the same talk shows with his rugged good looks and winning personality, that’s a ratings bonanza!”
NASCAR officials, who declined to appear on record in order to speak freely, said the proposal was dead on arrival with Helton but the idea does hold some merit. The ratings boost that NASCAR would experience with an Earnhardt Jr. Sprint Cup Championship would be significant and stock analysts forecast a stock spike for Wrangler Jeans and Amp Energy Drink when the plan was leaked.
Fan reaction to the proposed change ranged from NASCAR is already rigged to help Earnhardt Jr. to Woooooo hoooo go Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiioooooooooooooooor!
