Special Fan Giveaway Huge Hit at Michigan

Uploaded on May 26, 2007 by Russell CKnowing that race fans are always looking for something new and different, Michigan International Speedway upped the ante for fan giveaways this weekend.  Television viewers may have noticed a lot of empty-looking bleachers in Turn 4, Turn 2, and Turn 3 at the track on Sunday, but raceway officials say that’s only due to the fact that most of the first 25,000 fans to the raceway sat in those sections with their super-groovy MIS “invisibility cloak.”

“Oh, yeah, those seats were totally occupied,” said raceway spokesperson Bill “Short” N. Curlies.  “We sold a ton of tickets for the race, but you were just looking at a section of the stands where folks had put on their free invisibility cloaks.  They were totally there, though.  Paid attendees.  Yep.”

Members of the credentialed media doubted the veracity of the MIS promotion, saying no such thing as an invisibility cloak existed.

“Oh, hell, no,” Short N. replied to the challenges of the press, “The invisibility cloak is totally real.  We gave a car-sized invisibility cloak to Joe Nemechek, and you didn’t see him after the parade lap, did you?”

The media had to agree that they did not, in fact, see Joe Nemechek after the green flag dropped.

Short N. also admitted that the giveaway had an unintended effect on the race results.

“Apparently, a couple of invisibility cloaks made their way onto pit lane,” he said, “Alan Gustafson draped a couple over the fuel cans in the 16 and 48 pits before the final stop.  He says he’s real sorry, but he can’t stop smiling.”

all kidding aside, I was at the race sans invisibility cloak…the stands were about half full and there were a number of people in the restrooms and concession areas at any given time…i’ve seen it better…but it wasn’t any worse than most other tracks in the series. sovie haulers were pretty busy, it was a typical nascar weekend honestly…maybe a little lighter than normal…but as typical the media has to make a sensational story…go figure. fan attitude reflects the media direction…that sword you all weild is more powerful than you think…while projecting false sunshine…singing the praises of the reaper doesn’t help either…

Should have tested one on Jeremy Mayfield and David Letterman before distributing to MIS. Probably should send one to half the field at Sonoma.
