With the laps winding down under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, Michael Waltrip found himself wrapped up in an incident involving Martin Truex Jr., David Reutimann, and Clint Bowyer. While the crash ended Waltrip’s night, the resulting accident led to the race being red flagged with only 8 laps remaining.
“The wreck was pretty run of the mill for Mikey,” said Waltrip’s Deputy Assistant to the Assistant Crew Chief Hunter Buford. “But the wreck wasn’t what caused the red flag. It was the accident.”
As Waltrip’s car sat on the track, clean up crews mobilized to remove the debris from the track. That’s when a flood of liquid spilled from the underbelly of the NAPA Toyota and left a pool flowing down to the apron.
“Our response teams are prepared for a number of contengencies,” said Dusty Visper, Head Track Cleaner for the Sprint Cup Series. “I have to admit, this wasn’t one of them. Drivers find themselves in all sort of accidents so we pride ourselves on being prepared. It’s just that we aren’t necessarily prepared for accidents of this nature. We are talking about grown men here.”
As the fluid poured from his car, Waltrip reported to his crew chief that he would need “a fresh pair of britches” and requested that someone meet him at the Infield Care Center.
“I ain’t sure if it was the impact or the unexpected chance to relieve himself,” said Buford. “What I do know is Mikey had been holding it in for 492 laps and when nature calls, it calls. After a crash like that a guy can relax a bit because he doesn’t have all the stress of racing.”
It is unclear what most drivers do when confronted with the need to go to the bathroom during a race but judging from the amount of liquid left on the track from Waltrip’s car, it seems that at least one driver chooses to hold it in until the checkered flag drops.
“It’s embarrassing sure. No one really likes to discuss these things,” said Buford. “It’s an unspoken rule that we don’t discuss these matters. Given the situation here though I do think we need to examine some other options.”
In order to avoid another embarrassing incident in the future, NASCAR is considering the use of adult diapers to prevent any more unnecessary delays in future races.
