Otis Featherbean
Otis Featherbean sacrificed a promising career as a washboard player in a Tennessee jug band to follow his dream: to be the first and greatest NASCAR fan in American history. Ostracized from his community and disowned by his family, the young Featherbean entered a new world of shoes, interfamily romances and triple-digit horsepower. Featherbean slept on David Pearson’s doorstep until the age of 28, when the racing legend took him in and taught him to cheer madly for some of the closest finishes of the ace driver’s career. Rumors have long circulated that Featherbean was the fan who first brought turkey legs, instead of whole turkeys, to NASCAR tailgates. You might wonder where the tradition of taking your shirt off at the race in the middle of a storm of whiskey drunk came from — but you have Otis Featherbean to thank for this and many other innovations of racing fandom.
